WEN JIABAO MEETS WITH INDIAN DELEGATES TO THE FIRST MEETING OF CHINA-INDIA STRATEGIC ECONOMIC DIALOGUE (SED)

On September 26, 2011, Premier Wen Jiabao met at the Great Hall of the People with a delegation headed by Montek Singh Ahluwalia, deputy chairman of the Planning Commission of India, which was here attending the first meeting of China-India Strategic Economic Dialogue (SED).

Wen said that during his visit to India last year, he reached important consensus with Indian Prime Minister Singh on establishing the strategic economic dialogue mechanism with the aim of further strengthening bilateral mutual trust and enriching strategic cooperative partnership under the new situation. At the first meeting, both sides discussed their respective economic situations, macroeconomic policies as well as industrial policy and pragmatic cooperation on investment, infrastructure construction, high technology, energy saving and environmental protection and achieved positive results. He hoped both sides will continue efforts to allow this platform to play a greater role.

Wen stressed that China and India, as friendly neighbors and the largest developing countries, are both facing many challenges and opportunities and to maintain long-term healthy and stable development of bilateral relations is of great significance to the two countries, Asia and the world at large. The two sides should, based on the spirit of mutual respect, good neighborliness and friendship, strengthen communication and consultation in various fields and at all levels, expand cooperation, accommodate each other’s concerns and unswervingly follow the path of mutual benefit and common development.

Ahluwalia said that both India and China are emerging developing countries and shoulder the tasks of developing national economy and improving people’s livelihood. In the current international situation, India and China should strengthen coordination to safeguard their common interests. India is willing to work with China to take advantage of the strategic economic dialogue platform to conduct exchanges, promote pragmatic cooperation and contribute to achieving sustainable economic and social development of their respective countries and promoting world peace, stability and development.
