VISIT OF MR. YANG JIECHI FOREIGN MINISTER OF CHINA TO INDIA

At the invitation of Mr. S.M. Krishna, External Affairs Minister of India, H.E. Mr. Yang Jiechi, Foreign Minister of the People’s Republic of China, visited New Delhi on 29 February-1 March, 2012. The two Ministers held extensive discussions on bilateral, regional and global issues. They also deliberated on the agenda and outcome of the BRICS Summit due to take place in New Delhi in March 2012. The visiting Chinese Minister called Mr. M. Hamid Ansari, Vice President and Dr. Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister.

2. Following the talks between the two Foreign Ministers, it was agreed that:

I. To promote provincial and local-level cooperation between the two countries, the External Affairs Ministry of India and the China International Friendship Cities Association would conclude an umbrella agreement. Cooperation under this framework could begin with exchanges between Mumbai & Shanghai and Bangalore & Kunming.

II. To strengthen policy coordination on maritime security and explore possibilities of maritime cooperation, India and China will establish a Dialogue Mechanism on Maritime Cooperation that would include relevant ministries and agencies. Details would be worked out expeditiously and the Mechanism is expected to meet shortly.

III. In accordance with the 2010 MOU on promoting media exchanges, India and China will hold an annual High-Level Media Forum. Senior journalists and officials dealing with media will be participating in this forum. The spokespersons of the two Foreign Ministries will also exchange visits on an annual basis.
